4 Proven Tips to Conquer Fear and Anxiety

Though fear and anxiety – which often manifest together – may be draining your energy and motivation, following some easy steps can help you get through the worst of it.

Do something else

Sometimes all you need to lessen the fear and anxiety you just need to take a break and do something to clear your mind. You can do some exercise, read a new book or a book you love, watch a movie, or chill with friends.

Speak up or put it in words

Sharing your fear and anxiety with someone you trust can help you see your fear and anxiety – and the cause of it – in a different light. Talking a fear through may even make you realise that that which caused the fear and anxiety is easier to face than you thought.

If you can’t talk to someone, write down what your fears and anxieties are. Don’t worry about putting it in perfect words – even just writing down your train of thought can be helpful. “Talking it through with yourself” can be just as helpful as if you were talking to someone else.

Perfection isn’t everything

Some fears and anxieties can be caused by feeling that you are not good enough, smart enough, or the right person for a job. The fear of making mistakes can not only cause anxiety, but can also be debilitating. Make a point of it to remember that nothing and no one is perfect. If you focus only on your own mistakes or imperfections, you will often not even realise that there are other people who struggle with the same fears you do.

Know when to ask for help

If you feel that you can’t cope with the levels of fear and/or anxiety you experience, speak to a professional. You may be suffering from an anxiety disorder which requires treatment and intervention by professionals. Contacting the South African Depression and Anxiety Group  or the relevant helpline for your country is a good place to start – even if you just need someone to talk to.
